Čorba at Restoran Sarajevo
The best veal or beef soup in Skopje. All of the esnafs (craftsmen) from the Old Bazaar drink soup here before they open their shops. Historic, well-maintained design inside—very working class, very authentic.
My personal picks for exploring my hometown. From hidden gems to must-visit spots, this is how I'd show you around if you came to visit.

The Skopje local dish—burek inside bread. Yes, bread with bread. You can't find this anywhere else in the world. A true Skopje original that you have to try.
The local hotspot for qebapa/ćevapi. Not the touristy spot—this is where the locals go. Order kebap, beans (gravče), shopska salata, and a Strumka drink. That's the proper order.
Traditional dishes done right. Great spot for experiencing authentic Macedonian and Albanian cuisine in a proper setting.
Coffee culture here is serious. These are my go-to spots in the heart of the Old Bazaar.
For the specialty coffee lovers. Third-wave coffee done properly.

Get lost in the narrow cobblestone streets. One of the oldest and largest bazaars in the Balkans. Just wander and discover.
The local produce market. Fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, and more. Great for experiencing everyday local life.
Walk around Macedonia Square and the city center. Get lost among the (many) statues. Love them or hate them, they're part of the experience.
The ancient fortress overlooking the city. Walk up for panoramic views, especially beautiful at sunset. Been standing since the 6th century.
Just 15km from the city center, Matka is a stunning canyon with emerald-green waters. Rent a kayak, explore ancient caves, or hike the trails. Perfect for a half-day escape.
Skopje has a rich Islamic heritage with beautiful mosques throughout the city.
The most iconic mosque in Skopje, built in 1492. Stunning Ottoman architecture with a beautiful courtyard and garden. Located at the entrance of the Old Bazaar near the Stone Bridge. Try to talk to the imam if you get the chance.
Location: Old Bazaar entrance, by the Stone Bridge
Built in 1436, one of the oldest mosques in the city. Regular daily prayers and Jummah.
Location: Old Bazaar
Beautiful mosque with intricate interior decorations. Located in the Bit Pazar area.
Location: Bit Pazar
A quieter mosque perfect for peaceful prayer. Lovely courtyard.
Location: Old Bazaar
Personal favorites beyond the Old Bazaar. Worth the trip.
Great spot for coffee and sweets in a nice setting.

Shawls and scarves of extremely good quality. Local produce, not imported junk. This is where I buy gifts for family.

Currency is Macedonian Denar (MKD). Cards accepted in most places. ATMs are everywhere. Exchange at banks, not airports.
Macedonian and Albanian are spoken. Most people speak English. Learn "Faleminderit" (thank you) and "Selam Alejkum" or "Përshëndetje" to say hello.
Spring (April-May) or Fall (September-October). Summers are hot. Winters are cold but festive.
Skopje is very safe. Normal city precautions apply. Locals are friendly and helpful.
Get a local SIM at A1 or T-Mobile shops. Cheap data plans available. Most cafes have free WiFi.
