Old Bazaar streets

Walk Around the Old Bazaar

Get lost in the narrow cobblestone streets. One of the oldest and largest bazaars in the Balkans. Just wander and discover.

Visit the Green Bazaar

The local produce market. Fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, and more. Great for experiencing everyday local life.

City center statues

Get Lost in the City Center

Walk around Macedonia Square and the city center. Get lost among the (many) statues. Love them or hate them, they're part of the experience.

Kale Fortress

Climb the Kale

The ancient fortress overlooking the city. Walk up for panoramic views, especially beautiful at sunset. Been standing since the 6th century.

Matka Canyon

Day Trip to Matka Canyon

Just 15km from the city center, Matka is a stunning canyon with emerald-green waters. Rent a kayak, explore ancient caves, or hike the trails. Perfect for a half-day escape.

Mosques & Prayer

Skopje has a rich Islamic heritage with beautiful mosques throughout the city.

Mustafa Pasha Mosque

Mustafa Pasha Mosque (1492)

The most iconic mosque in Skopje, built in 1492. Stunning Ottoman architecture with a beautiful courtyard and garden. Located at the entrance of the Old Bazaar near the Stone Bridge. Try to talk to the imam if you get the chance.

Sultan Murat Mosque

Built in 1436, one of the oldest mosques in the city. Regular daily prayers and Jummah.

Yahya Pasha Mosque

Beautiful mosque with intricate interior decorations. Located in the Bit Pazar area.

Isa Bey Mosque

A quieter mosque perfect for peaceful prayer. Lovely courtyard.

Prayer Tips

  • • Most mosques are open to visitors between prayer times
  • • Dress modestly when visiting (cover arms and legs)
  • • Remove shoes before entering the prayer hall
  • • Women may need a headscarf (some mosques provide them)
  • • Friday prayers (Jummah) are well attended—arrive early

Local Tips

Getting Around

Download BeeRide for reliable rides. The city center is very walkable, so you won't need transport much.

Money

Currency is Macedonian Denar (MKD). Cards accepted in most places. ATMs are everywhere. Exchange at banks, not airports.

Language

Macedonian and Albanian are spoken. Most people speak English. Learn "Faleminderit" (thank you) and "Selam Alejkum" or "Përshëndetje" to say hello.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May) or Fall (September-October). Summers are hot. Winters are cold but festive.

Safety

Skopje is very safe. Normal city precautions apply. Locals are friendly and helpful.

WiFi & SIM

Get a local SIM at A1 or T-Mobile shops. Cheap data plans available. Most cafes have free WiFi.
